Health Exams Every Woman Should Run

by Nova Wellness Center July 27, 2019

Prevention, they say is better than cure. Have you had these tests?

  • Spinal Evaluation – After the various pregnancies and childbirths, carrying of heavy hand bags, walking on high heeled shoes, bending to sweep etc, what is the integrity of your spine? Spinal misalignments can happen as a result of all the above and more. Some people are born with spinal abnormalities like scoliosis. However, they may not experience any discomfort until they are teenagers when changes in hormones may produce some symptoms. Doing a spinal evaluation (with a Chiropractor) will show if indeed there are any misalignments that could be resulting in nerve pressure. This is important because nerve pressure also can lead to several dysfunctions. Doing a spinal evaluation once a year is necessary to ensure that your skeletal frame is in optimum form.
2
  • Xrays and Bone Density –Normal ageing COMES WITH DEGENERATION. This test shows the integrity of bones in the entire body. Women 50 years and above especially should have bone density tests done to ensure that their bones are not de-mineralizing. Once you start menopause, the hormonal changes can also affect your bones. Osteoporosis commonly causes an abnormal curvature of the spine in elderly women. Due to the weakening of the spinal bones these women may present with a hunch back like symptoms.
  • Monthly Self Breast Exam – All adult women, 18 years and above must check for lumps in breasts at least once a month. Women 40 years and above who are at high risk should also have mammograms at least once a year. Early detection of malignant cancer cells can lead to successful treatment.
  • Hypertension – Do you know your numbers? Depending on age, lifestyle, and family history, you may be required to check your blood pressure on a daily basis at home. If you have been already diagnosed, it will be important to get a machine and record all readings. Normal blood pressure reading is 120/80. Pre-hypertensive is a range from 121/81 – 140/90. Hypertension is diagnosed when three or more consecutive readings are above 140/90.  If your blood pressure reading is in the pre-hypertension range then this is the time to exercise and watch your diet to prevent it from advancing to full-blown hypertension.
  • Check blood sugar and blood cholesterol – In a healthy woman with no family history of diabetes or hypertension or high cholesterol, lab tests should be run at least once a year after 30 years of age. If you have been diagnosed with the above then blood glucose or cholesterol levels should be checked at least every 6 months. With early detection, diseases like diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol can be managed without drugs.
  •  Eye Test – If there is a family history of diabetes or hypertension then after 40 years of age each woman should test their eyes at least once a year. Undiagnosed or severe forms of diabetes can lead to neuropathy of some nerves in the eyes which may even lead to blindness. A severe form of hypertension can also lead to a bursting of some blood vessels in the eye.
  • PAP Smear – Cells are taken from the cervix to check for precancerous cells. After 21 years of age, each female should have a pap smear once a year till age 65 by which time women who have had clean pap smears can stop doing them. Women who have multiple sexual partners are more prone to cervical cancer but every woman of childbearing age should have yearly pap smears. This type of cancer again is treatable if it is caught early.
  • Thyroid Test – Extreme weight gain and weight loss, fatigue, insomnia, heart palpitations etc, can be a result of too much or too little activity of the thyroid gland. After the age of 35 years, every woman should be checked at least once in 5 years

Could Your Workstation Be Killing You?

by Nova Wellness Center July 25, 2019

On average most people spend about 30 – 35 years in the active workforce before they retire. If we indeed make it to 70 years before God calls us home then it means about half of our lives will be spent working to earn a living.

What happens during this time of active duty is therefore very essential to one’s health.

Are you frequently experiencing headaches, neck, back or joint pain? Or maybe you experience numbness in your fingertips or thighs and legs. Do you feel tired even first thing in the morning or do you have difficulty focusing on one thing as you go about your daily duties? These are all signs of stress, most commonly from repetitive action at work. Not adhering to proper ergonomics at work can bring on all of the problems mentioned above. Most people ignore these signs from the body and continue going about their daily affairs until something really bad happens.

I will encourage you to look at the following parameters closely to see where you can make some corrections at your workstation to enhance your health.

  1. Do you have an ergonomic chair that supports your body from head to toe?
  2. Is the top of your computer monitor at least at your eye level?
  3. Do you have enough legroom to extend your legs out without any obstruction?
  4. Are you sitting at your desk for more than 45 minutes to an hour before getting up to move about?
  5. Lastly, does your job require you to often pick things below your knee level or above your shoulder level?

Please answer the questions above honestly. Where there are pitfalls please take the necessary steps to fix as soon as possible because very slowly your body can deteriorate if precautions are not taken.

In my experience, I have found that most employers are willing to provide the necessary accoutrements for their employees to be healthy and safe within the office space however many employees do not speak up. Please don’t let your silence kill you. Report occupational hazards as quickly as possible because the truth is that you can only be effective and productive at your job when you are healthy and that is what every employer wants.

I strongly recommend that quarterly, managers and or C.E.Os must have ergonomists come in to do ergonomic assessments of all employees and training to ensure that everybody is doing the right thing. This will cut down on medical bills and increase productivity because there will be fewer employees going on sick leaves if the right preventive measures are put in place.

Always remember that your health is indeed your wealth.

WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR WALLET?

by Nova Wellness Center July 22, 2019

Have you considered that your wallet could be the source of your back pains?

When you sit on your wallet, imagine you are sitting on an uneven surface. This causes one hip to be higher than the other; the result is a misaligned lumbar spine.Where the wallet usually sits is the right on top of the piriformis muscle where the sciatic nerve runs. Over a period of time the piriformis muscle contracts and impinges the sciatic nerve. The irritation of the nerve can lead to back pain which travels from the waist area all the way to the leg or foot.

This happens to be the path of the sciatic nerve.  Some people will describe the feeling in the leg as numbness others will call it tingling or a burning sensation.  This condition is called SCIATICA or sciatic nerve pain.

Most people who have sciatica will tell you that it can be extremely painful. So why go through all this pain when this condition is totally preventable?

Wallets cause back problems for men. Ghana’s favourite Chiropractor explains why.

However, if you are already experiencing this type of pain then it is essential to have it diagnosed properly as soon as possible. Other causes of sciatica include lumbar disc bulges or prolapse, spinal canal stenosis (narrowing) and general wear and tear of the lumbar spine.

There are certain factors that may put you at more risk for sciatica: Being obese, having uncontrollable diabetes or being sedentary.

Whenever possible, opt for conservative treatments over more invasive and drastic measures, such as surgery. Chiropractic care and adjustments are a viable option for treating the pain and symptoms associated with sciatic nerve issues.

A 2006 study published in Spine found that manipulations (adjustments) helped relieve pain due to acute back pain and sciatica. Another study published in 2010 found that sixty per cent of sciatica patients (who hadn’t found relief from other therapies) experienced the same level of relief from chiropractic adjustments as patients who eventually had surgery. Acupuncture, therapeutic stretching exercises and massage therapy may also help control the pain from sciatica naturally.

Nova Wellness Center climaxes 5th Anniversary with a health walk

by Nova Wellness Center September 2, 2018

One of Ghana’s foremost Chiropractic and Wellness facilities, the Nova Wellness Center, has climaxed its 5th year anniversary celebrations with a health walk geared towards promoting  healthy lifestyles.

The walk, which brought together hundreds of patrons also  had in attendance the Mayor of Accra, Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Member of  the for Klottey-Korley Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, as well as renowned actress, Jackie Appiah.

Aside benefiting from the health activity and health talks, some patrons were also rewarded with numerous prizes, including cash and air tickets.

Commenting on the walk, the Member of  Parliament for Klottey-Korley Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, who was full of praise for the organizers  called on Ghanaians  to prioritize their health and exercise regularly.

Nova Health Walk

“We have so many age groups here, this is really good because we have to think about our health. There is something about our health that if you lose it beyond a certain point, it doesn’t matter how much money you have you can’t get it back. Maintenance is very important, we maintain our cars and so our bodies need maintenance as well,” she said.

For her part, the Chief Executive Officer of Nova Wellness Center, Dr Naa Ashelley Dordor explained that looking at the rate of lifestyle diseases, the clinic saw it wise to use the occasion to enlighten members of the public on the need to stay healthy and also ensure that their spines are well catered for. She also recognized and honoured one of her most loyal patients, Mr. Emmanuel Quarshie with a citation.

The health walk was preceded by a separate health screening on June 22nd 2018 which also saw over two hundred persons trooping to the premises of the clinic at North Ridge to be screened.

The free health screening featured a health talk on the spine and how wrong posture affects it, BMI and posture checks, as well as a complimentary chiropractic treatment.

“We’ve noticed that a lot of Ghanaians have spinal problems. Either they ignore them or they can’t afford it or for whatever reason, they never treat it. So we decided that as we celebrate our five years anniversary, we’re going to invite people to come in so that we will check their spines to see if there are any problems there,” the Chief Executive Officer of Nova Wellness Centre, Dr Asheley Dordor explained.

She stated that many Ghanaians are uninformed about their spinal problems due to ignorance.

She bemoaned the low chiropractor-to-patient ratio in Ghana, explaining that for a country  with about  28 million persons, there are just about  15 chiropractors practicing .

Nova Wellness Center was established in May 2013, to provide chiropractic services to families, corporations, individuals and the general public.

The health facility has been of an immense benefit to thousands of individuals to achieve maximum wellness without the use of drugs or surgery.

The Center was recently awarded the best Health Facility at the Small Medium Enterprises Ghana Awards (SMEGA).

The five years anniversary of Nova Wellness Center was under the theme: “Empowering Our Communities to Achieve Maximum Wellness.’’ For the rest of the month of July, Nova Wellness Center has discounted rates for Chiropractic treatment and all are invited to take advantage of this promotion.

A note to a Ghanaian journalist

by Nova Wellness Center November 28, 2017

In Ghana today, one of the most hardworking groups of people I have come across are our friends from the media fraternity. Elsewhere you can  have a producer, an editor, a director and others doing their respective jobs but here sometimes it can be a ‘one man or two men show’. One person may be taking on three people’s duties.

Sometimes journalists are even forced to wear the marketing cap as well. So truth be told, most journalists have little or no time for themselves. Like I always say, your body is a machine that needs frequent maintenance. Some of my friends in the media take better care of their cars than themselves. Please pay attention to your health and love yourself:

  1. Know your numbers. When was the last time you went for a medical check-up? You should know at least your blood pressure, blood sugar and blood lipid levels.
  2. You must find 20 minutes 4 times a week to dedicate to exercise
  3. You must eat your heaviest meals during the day and eat light at night. I know most of you are so busy during the day working that you may be snacking here and there on junk foods. Now when you get home late at night then you want to eat heavily. Please put an end to this habit!
  4. Stop drinking and smoking.
  5. Lastly rest! You cannot save the world on your own. You need to have at least 6-7 hours of rest most nights if not all.

True health and wellness does not lie in a pill. True health lies within your very body. Our health system does not preach prevention. All our focus is on building new fancy hospitals. We are not looking at the basics.

What structures can we put in place to encourage more people to do the things listed above to prevent the occurrence of hypertension, stroke, diabetes and all other LIFESTYLE diseases? If care is not taken we will lose many citizens who are essential to the development of Ghana. Stand up today and be responsible for your health.
