Health tests for every man must run

by nova November 11, 2017

Do you know your numbers?

Where is your wallet? Most men keep their wallets in their back pockets. This can lead to pelvic rotation especially if they sit on the wallet.

Over a period of time there could be a buildup of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve irritation or Sciatica, can lead to waist pain which goes all the way to the bottom of the feet.

Looking at x-rays will help us determine if there is indeed any vertebral or pelvic misalignment which could be putting pressure on the sciatic or any other nerve.
Correcting this with Chiropractic will bring structural correction to the spine and reduce symptoms.

PSA test

After 50 years of age, at least once a year, men should have their PSA levels checked. If you are at high risk due to family history or prostate infections then you may start testing at age 40 years; your doctor may ask for more frequent testing too.

Digital rectal exams may be needed to feel the prostate gland. It is important to note an abnormal PSA may not necessarily mean prostate cancer. It can also mean a prostate infection (prostatitis) or a prostate enlargement (benign prostate hypertrophy).

The prognosis is usually good if caught early and appropriately treated.
By Dr. Naa Asheley Dordor

Colonoscopy

Men are at a higher risk for colon cancer. Colon polyps are fingerlike projections that grow in the large intestine as we age. A colonoscopy is done by inserting a tube with a camera into the colon to detect the polyps.

Sometimes the polyps are removed at the time of the colonoscopy. If the polyps are not removed, they can turn cancerous and sometimes spread to other organs.
Periodic screening can prevent colon cancer.

BMI, waist to hip ratio

Body Mass Index uses weight and height to determine if one is underweight, overweight or obese.

BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by height in meter squared; kg/m x m. BMI of < 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 – 24.9 is normal, 25 – 29.9 is overweight, 30 or greater is obese.

Waist to hip ratio gives information specifically about the midsection. Abdominal fat is dangerous to the body as it stores toxins around vital organs like the liver, kidneys, intestines, stomach etc.

Waist to Hip ratio is calculated by dividing the waist circumference by the hip circumference. In men, anything above 0.9 is considered abdominal obesity and in women anything above 0.85 is considered the same.

Excess body fat can be a risk factor for diseases like high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, cancer etc hence checking these two ratios will help you determine where you are.

Hypertension

Do you know your numbers? Depending on age, lifestyle and family history, you may be required to check your blood pressure daily at home. If you have been already diagnosed, it will be important to get a machine and record all readings.

Normal blood pressure reading is 120/80. Pre-hypertensive is a range from 121/81 – 140/90. Hypertension is diagnosed when three or more consecutive readings are above 140/90.

If your blood pressure reading is in the pre-hypertension range then this is the time to exercise and watch your diet to prevent it from advancing to full blown hypertension.

Check blood sugar, blood cholesterol

In a healthy man with no family history of diabetes or hypertension or high cholesterol, lab tests should be run at least once a year after 30 years of age.

If you have been diagnosed with the above then blood glucose or cholesterol levels should be checked at least every six months.

With early detection, these diseases can be managed without drugs. Prevention is better than cure so please run these tests to prevent the associated diseases.

Chiropractic Improves Depression

by nova October 17, 2017

People suffering from depression, will have persistent sadness or pessimism. They have times of feeling helpless, hopeless, worthless, or guilty. Have difficulty concentrating or remembering things. They will lose interest in activities, have insomnia or oversleep. They can also have weight gain or loss and feelings of fatigue. They may also be irritable, anxious or suicidal.

Chiropractic

The brain is the master controller of all of the body and its parts. The brain communicates through the brain stem, spinal cord, and nerves. When the first bone in the neck (called the atlas) shifts or twists out of position, it can irritate the spinal cord keeping the proper signals from going through. A C1/atlas misalignment may cause a decrease in blood and oxygen flow to the brain. This affects how your brain communicates with the rest of your body. Seemingly unrelated symptoms can show up including headaches, back and neck pain, depression, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, asthma, digestive problems, and numbness to name a few. An upper Cervical (neck) Chiropractic adjustment is a natural option to treat this.

While Upper Cervical Chiropractic can have a profound effect on a person’s depression, we must remember that there can be many causes and factors contributing to a person’s depression.

Breaking the Cycle of Pain

Some people experience common chronic pain like headaches, lower back pain or arthritis. Depression is the most common emotion associated with chronic pain. In fact, depression occurs three to four times more in people with chronic pain than in the general population. People with chronic pain and depression can suffer changes in their physical, mental and social capacities and their quality of life. Chronic pain can cause difficulty in sleep, agitation, and people cannot perform their normal activities in their daily routine or concentrate. This can lead to a vicious cycle because it leads to depression, which leads to more chronic pain. Sometimes depression can occur before the chronic pain but nonetheless create a cycle. A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry concluded that people suffering from self-defined severe depression are seeking out complementary and alternative treatments, like chiropractic, more than conventional therapies. Through “spinal adjustment,” also known as “chiropractic adjustment,” patients can have mobility restored into their joints and alleviate their physical pain, which can also lead to mental alleviation and milder depression symptoms.

Nutrition

Iodine deficiency. Symptoms include being upset or crying for no “real” reason. People can become overly emotional at television commercials or movies. They can have cold hands and/or feet and a lowered body temperature (lower than 98.6o F). Also, a loss of  hair either on the head or the outer third of the eyebrow. B-6, Folate, other B vitamins deficiency can lead to a decrease in the production of serotonin also known as ‘happy hormone’. This can lead to a persistent sadness, moodiness etc.  Sometimes deficiencies are caused by toxicity especially from heavy metals. Finally, some people cannot produce energy properly in their bodies, they will tend to eat lots of sugar or sweet foods. This will give them a quick burst of energy, with a feeling of euphoria that then leads to a crash. If your blood tests show the above or more nutritional deficiencies then you may talk to your doctor about nutritional supplementation as well.

Mental Wellness

Using techniques like meditation may help one to change their thinking processes and improve mood. Other techniques like writing a gratitude list, outlining everything that they are grateful for will also help to appreciate the good things in life and not only dwell on the bad. It is important for all to acknowledge that life is about balancing good and bad situations constantly.

Exercise for Depression

Physical activity releases endorphins that can help boost mood. Regular exercise is also linked to higher self-esteem, better sleep, less stress, and more energy. Any type of moderate activity, from swimming to skipping, jogging, walking etc. can help. Choose something you enjoy and aim for 20 to 30 minutes, four or five times a week. A recent study in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience found evidence suggesting exercise is as effective in treating the symptoms of depression as antidepressant drugs.

The end of the year is for most people the most stressful time of the year. For us here in Ghana, our election day is approaching and you may be stressing about what will happen if your party does not win. Or you may be wondering how to get those toys and clothing for your family members considering that your finances are not the best. Since we cannot avoid all these stressors entirely, I will strongly recommend that you use Chiropractic to keep your nervous system in check, eat a well balanced diet, learn to be grateful for what you have and keep active with some form of exercise. This will go a long way to help you manage your stress and prevent depression.

Dr Naa Dordor is Best Health SME provider

by nova October 14, 2017

     Source: Graphic.com.gh

Hard work indeed pays. Barely four years after she decided to serve people with the healing art of chiropractic, Dr Naa Ashley Dordor was awarded for her tremendous services in the health sector at the Small and Medium Enterprises Ghana Awards (SMEGA) recently.

Her clinic, the Nova Wellness Centre, based at North Ridge in Accra, is an alternative healthcare facility that uses chiropractic, nutrition, exercise and massage to treat illnesses.

The centre, adjudged the Best SME Facility in the health service delivery category, was chosen ahead of several other SMEs selected across the length and breadth of the country.
She and her team took home a prestigious trophy, a citation, certificate and an insurance cover from the sponsors.

The awards ceremony, which was put together by the SMEs Ghana Awards Scheme, in partnership with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, World Association of SMEs, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and Vodafone Business Solutions, is to acknowledge, celebrate and encourage excellence among SMEs in Ghana.

In an interview with Dr Dordor, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Lead Chiropractor at the Nova Wellness Centre, she said the awards came as a surprise to her and the entire team.

According to her, if more people take active steps to prevent themselves from falling sick “we will have a healthier workforce to drive the nation forward. That is why it is important we do constant mass health education on chiropractic, exercise, good nutrition and the essence of rest to the entire human body.”

Passion for chiropractic

Dr Dordor fell in love with the profession as a patient herself while she was a student in Canada. However, her passion grew more during a mission trip in Vietnam with fellow students from the Chiropractic College.

“It was at that point I decided I was coming back home to Ghana my country to attend to the health needs of the people through chiropractic healing,” she stated.

Through our interactions, it was obvious that health issues relating to children and women were top on her priority list.

Dr Dordor is very passionate about using chiropractic to manage various disorders in children and adults.

Her main focus of treatment is correcting spinal misalignments to bring improvement into the nervous system.

Dr Dordor, who believes in prevention rather than cure, says there is a lot that can be done to prevent people from being sick. “The amount of money we spend on medication and surgeries will reduce significantly,” she indicated.

According to her, a lot of patients, through chiropractic and exercises, are able to put away the painkillers they are so much addicted to with time.

All about chiropractic

Dr Dordor explained that chiropractic is the world’s biggest natural healthcare science which focuses on correcting spinal misalignments (subluxations) that cause nerve interference and inhibit communication between the brain and body organs.

“This non-surgical drug-free treatment boosts the body’s natural healing power,” she explained.

Touching on the chiropractic adjustment, she said it was a specific gentle force applied to the spinal vertebra or joint to remove nerve pressure and enhance proper flow of impulses.

“When the body is free from nerve interference, healing is enhanced and symptoms such as asthma, allergies, headaches, neck, back, knee and other joint pains start to improve,” she emphasised.

She further noted that one can suffer his/her first subluxation (spinal misalignment) at birth; but bad posture, improper lifting techniques and accidents, among others, may also lead to subluxations.

When asked how one could know whether or not he or she had a subluxation, Dr Dordor said an entire family could go through their chiropractic evaluation to find out if they indeed had subluxations.

“At the Nova Wellness Centre, we will check your range of motion and posture. You will also do a bio-structural scan and have your prescribed X-rays analysed by our doctors,” she stressed.

Dr Dordor mentioned that most people were not aware that children, as well as pregnant women could also have chiropractic adjustments.

“These days you find young children carrying heavy school bags, which is not so good for their health; and in the corporate world the sitting posture of many is equally detrimental to their health,” she emphasised.

Treatment modalities

When it comes to treatment, therapeutic modalities are utilised during the treatment process to reduce pain, improve local circulation, transfer nutrients and limit inflammation, thus creating an optimal environment for injury repair.

“The centre also provides massage therapies and facial treatments. Massage therapy complements chiropractic care because it promotes relaxation of the muscle that surrounds the spine and various joints. Facial treatments are equally necessary to keep your skin vibrant and glowing.

“Just as proper nutrition and regular exercises are important parts of heathy living, facial treatments are necessary to slow down the ageing process,” she stated.

Background

Dr Dordor obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from the St Mary’s University at Nova Scotia, Canada.

She went on to specialise at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Devenport Modalities in the USA.

After her graduation, she worked at the Chiro and Wellness Centre in Chicago, Illinois, where she treated many individuals with chiropractic care. After a year, she decided to move back home to Ghana.

In Ghana, Dr Dordor worked with the Spinal Clinic in Accra for about a year before starting her own practice, formerly called Nova Chiropractic Health Centre.

She had her primary education at the Achimota Primary and JHS. She proceeded to the Akosombo International School.

Dr Dordor is married to Mr Michael Dordor with whom she has two girls – Michelle and Maya — who are three and six months old, respectively.

She is also fond of her only brother, Nii Ashitei Ashitey.

“In fact, I credit my successes to the unflinching support from my husband and my entire family. Sometimes, I have to be careful when I discuss ideas with my husband because he will push me so hard to make sure that I achieve my goals. My mum and my in-laws have also been my backbone and I’m always grateful.

“We believe that one of the biggest things standing between corporations and the achievement of their goals is the health of the employees. Our corporate wellness programme has served employees of many organisations. Some churches and schools have also benefitted our free health education and chiropractic care,” she pointed out.

Dr Dordor who is currently trying to shed some baby fat loves to eat kenkey with fish and hot pepper.  Her favourite colours are purple and maroon.

To her team, clients and potential ones, she said with a smile: “We have many rivers to cross and mountains to climb and I can’t wait.”

Ellembele MP offers elderly free chiropractic care service

by Nova Wellness Center October 27, 2016

October 27, 2016

The Member of Parliament for the Ellembele Constituency, in the Western Region, Armah-Kofi Buah, in partnership   with the Nova Wellness Center has provided free chiropractic services to about four hundred (400) elderly persons in the constituency.

The event which took place at the Aya Community Center, Ambain –  a day care center for the aged, saw the beneficiaries given massages, therapeutic stretches, as well as  lecture sections on how to use rudimentary exercises  to manage various joint aches associated with old age.  They were also enlightened on good and bad postures.

Commenting on the exercise, Mr Armah-Kofi Buah   who is also   the Minister of Energy and Petroleum , and a parliamentary aspirant for the constituency said the aim of the project was to equip the beneficiaries with knowledge on how to stay strong and healthy.

“Our elderly are very neglected in our society, that is why we set up the Aya Community Center to provide support to this group of people. I am very happy about the impact Dr. Naa and her team have had on our old folks. As MP of this area,  I am very concerned about the health of my constituents and I will continue to do my best to improve the health conditions of the aged,” he MP said.

“ We will continue to provide Chiropractic services to many more people who need it around here,” he continued.

For her part, the CEO of Nova Wellness Centre (NWC), Dr. Mrs. Naa Asheley Dordor, said her outfit decided to partner the Member of Parliament of the area due to how beneficial the initiative was going  be for  the old men and women in the locality.

“As a Chiropractor, my main focus is to keep the spinal vertebrae in their optimal position so that they don’t put pressure on the nerves. Nerve pressure can lead to conditions like back pain, headaches, neck pain and several joint aches. A lot of the people we saw are still engaged in some farming activities. Many of which have led to very stiff joints which put them in a lot of pain.” Now these elderly especially in our rural areas may not have access to Chiropractic care to help with their body aches and pains but they need it the most,’’

Dr, Naa Asheley  encouraged the setting up of more of such centers for the elderly, emphasizing the need for health education for them frequently.

unnamed-2

“ We look forward to working closely with Aya Community Center and other centers for the aged to improve the lives of many elderly in Ghana.”

The AYA Community Centre (ACC) is an elder care facility with the focus on promoting and encouraging the healthcare and wellbeing of the elderly.   It was established in 2014 to serve as a safe and secure place for the elderly in the community, reducing the burden on the lives of both attendants and families by providing quality day care.

NOVA Gives Free Chiropractic Services To PIWC Congregation

by nova September 15, 2016

 By: Attah -Effah Badu

As part of its long term commitment to educate, inspire and empower individuals to move from ‘sick care’ to ‘wellness care, the Nova Wellness Center, has given a free chiropractic and sitting massage services to members of the Pentecost International Centre (PIWC) Atomic, Accra.

The event which forms part of the health center’s corporate social responsibilities was held to celebrate this year’s Republic Day.

NWC is a vibrant and dynamic healthcare facility that uses Chiropractic, Nutrition, Exercise and Massage to treat diseases.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Naa Asheley Dordor, a Chiropractor at the Nova Wellness Center advised the congregation to be mindful of their healthcare and to have regular health checkups to determine the state of their body system.

She further told them to have spinal x-ray tests as soon as they feel symptoms of spine disorder, since it’s effective to correct it at an early rather than old stage.

“It is easy to correct spinal misalignment at the early stage compared to the later stage where efficiency is low,” she said.

She stressed that a lot of factors contribute to the misalignment of the spine. Some of these, she said includes; stress, car accident, posture, anxiety and carrying of heavy loads on the head are a few of the activities that can result in spine disorder.

Dr. Naa said one should be careful of what they take in since some toxins like alcohol, nicotine and caffeine softens the bones which makes them move out of place causing spinal misalignment.

She therefore encouraged the congregation to make sure that they eat well and visit health centers for spine checkups once they feel symptoms. She also advised them to pay attention to their posture and exercise regularly for free flow and circulation of blood.

Nova Wellness Center is a natural healthcare center with the primary aim of correcting spine and its associated disorders without surgery or medicine.

Graphic holds wellness programme for staff

by nova October 2, 2015

• (Mrs) Naa Ashele Dordor (front), CEO, Nova Chiropractic Health Centre, educating GCGL staff about the human spinal system at a health talk. Picture: EMMANUEL ASAMOAH ADDAI.

The Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has organised a chiropractic and wellness programme for its staff in Accra.
The programme, which included a health talk, massage sessions and posture sessions, was aimed at inculcating in the employees the culture of wellness and a healthy lifestyle.

GCGL staff thronged the training room to get their spines checked and to learn about correct sitting postures to ensure healthy spines.

Pay attention to employees

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nova Chiropractic Health Centre, Dr Mrs Naa Asheley Dordor, tasked employers to pay particular attention to the working environment of their staff such as making sure they provided working chairs which were in alignment to the spine.

She observed that most employees had been sitting behind the computers for more than eight hours daily, adding that it was, therefore, paramount for organisations to pay particular attention to the kind of working chairs they provided to the workers.

“If you don’t maintain a proper posture when you work, it will in turn cause spinal challenges which will impose high medical bills on the company,” she said.

Dr Dordor underscored the need for companies to engage in chiropractic training because it would decrease sick leave days which most employees took as a result of spinal issues because of bad sitting habits.

Incorporate chiropractic

Dr Dordor called on the management of organisations to incorporate chiropractic care into the routines of the organisations to ensure that their staff were healthy to increase productivity, adding that companies should establish corporate wellness centres to take care of the chiropractic needs of the workers.

She stressed the fact that stress was harmful and led to low productivity on the part of employees.

She, therefore, called on employees to incorporate stress management techniques in their work and homes to help them deal with the challenge.
