Old age comes with health-related issues like musculoskeletal and joint pains. The AYA Community Centre (ACC), an elderly care facility with the focus on promoting the healthcare and wellbeing of the elderly in collaboration with Ghana’s favourite spine clinic, Nova Wellness Center (NWC) has held a two-day free chiropractic screening and adjustments exercise for about 300 senior citizens in Ellembelle in the Western Region of Ghana.

Speaking at the event, the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle constituency, Emmanuel  Armah  Kofi Buah who sponsored the screening underscored the need for the health and wellbeing of the aged to be prioritized.

He said, though the annual health screening initiative comes with a financial burden, it has proven to be very beneficial to the people of the constituency. He thanked the Nova Wellness Center team led by Dr Naa Asheley Dordor for their continuous support over the years. He presented a citation to the team.

Do I Have a Cold or Flu?

by Nova Wellness Center October 8, 2019

Cold and Flu are used almost interchangeably but they mean different things. One can get the common cold so easily, hence its name. It is characterized by a sore throat, a runny nose, sneezing and sometimes teary eyes.

The flu, on the other hand is characterized by all of the above as well as high-grade fever and joint pain. Both the common cold and flu are caused by viruses and usually resolve on their own without any drugs by a week or two.

When you have a productive cough and fever in addition to the above -mentioned symptoms then you may have a bacterial infection. Now you need an antibiotic to clear the infection. It is important to go to the hospital for the appropriate tests to be done to arrive at a diagnosis for subsequent treatment. It is dangerous to take just any antibiotic without a proper diagnosis. The bacteria can become resistant and hence very difficult to treat.

Studies have shown a link between the nervous system and the immune system, and chiropractic should be a part of your health routine—but there are some other natural methods you can employ to boost your immune system to hopefully starve off a cold or the flu.

5 Natural Ways to Naturally Prevent Colds and Flu

  1. Enjoy Quality Sleep

Your body’s cells get replenished during sleep so it is critical that you get at least seven hours of good sleep every night. Good sleep means uninterrupted sleep with little to no external stimuli like light or music. Your mobile phone should be on silent and away from your bed when you sleep so that you are not tempted to use your phone during bedtime. In fact, studies have revealed that three nights of low quality sleep can drop your immune system function by 60 per cent. Then you become susceptible to a cold or flu.

  • Get a hobby

Sing, dance, play cards, knit, play a musical instrument like the piano or watch a good movie to de-stress. Chronic stress is just plain bad for your body—and that includes your immune system. The Mayo Clinic states that the stress hormone, cortisol, which increases with stress, changes your immune system responses. You can get sick easily if your immune system is not functioning optimally. So matter what you may be going through find some time for stress relief otherwise you will be spending your money on medications whiles you ponder about your health on the couch. If you cannot deal with the stress then talk to an expert.

  • Move your body

They say motion is life so whatever you do you cannot stop moving. Exercise is another excellent way to boost your immune system. A brisk walk three-four times a week will strengthen your heart and increase you’re the oxygen capacity of your lungs. If walking is boring then try hitting the gym or get some exercise videos for home. Whatever you do, just keep moving that body.

  • Dose of Vitamin D

These days most people spend less than five minutes in the sun because they are cooked up in their offices all day long. Vitamin D is essential for a robust immune response but because we are not getting enough sunlight many people are Vitamin D deficient. You can also get some Vitamin D from egg yolk and some fish like salmon. If you are diagnosed with low Vitamin D then you might have to depend on supplements.

  • Ditch the sugar

Sugar has been catching a lot of flak lately, but there’s good cause for concern and one of them is immune suppression—and this isn’t new. Four decades ago, a study was published by researchers from Loma Linda University, which demonstrated a change in the white blood cells’ ability to kill germs after participants consumed a large amount of sugar. In addition, further research links sugar to inflammation, and this includes white bread and rice which quickly break down into sugar in the body.

As we await the harmattan this year please prepare yourself and that of your family against any infections.

Why go for surgery when a chiropractor can help?

by Nova Wellness Center September 29, 2019

More than 98 per cent of the people who sought the assistance of a chiropractor were able to experience an elimination or reduction of their back pain without surgery and were, therefore, able to get back to work after several weeks.

Compared to surgery, chiropractic care is inexpensive. Surgical costs combine with medications, imaging and rehabilitation costs average case approaches $100,000 with some upwards to $200,000. The average costs for treating the low back pain with a Chiropractor is less than $3,000, a small per cent of the costs of medical intervention.

An interesting study discovered that the rate of surgery depended not on the condition alone but greatly on what type of doctor was seen first by the injured worker or patient. If the patient or injured worker was first seen by a surgeon, then over 42% would result in surgery. However, if they were first seen by a chiropractor, only 1.5% would have surgery. The rate of having an expensive surgery was reduced by over 95%, just by the choice of going to a chiropractor first.

After surgery, you will need to take a lot of time to recuperate which could last for up to several months. Besides being inconvenienced, you may develop other complications such as nerve damage, infections, anaesthesia, blood clots or worse, stroke. In the case of nerve damage, you risk having sexual dysfunction, paralysis or loss of bowel of bladder control, not mentioning severe pain and weakness.
Your first choice and least invasive application should be chiropractic care, which serves as a perfect alternative to surgery.

Anaesthesia Risks

Most spine surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia. You will be given medication through an intravenous (IV) line to put you to sleep, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure.

Risks from anaesthesia are rare but serious. These risks include heart attack, stroke, brain damage, and death. These complications may be caused by drug reactions or problems stemming from other medical conditions.

That said, any operation has some degree of risk, including:

  • Reaction to anaesthesia or other drugs
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Blood clots, for instance in your legs or lungs
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Herniated disk
  • Nerve damage, which can lead to weakness, paralysis, pain, sexual dysfunction, or loss of bowel or bladder control

The odds that something could go wrong go up for people with certain health conditions. They also vary by type of surgery. Part of your surgeon’s job is to identify potential problems. So talk it over before you head to the OR.

Sexual Dysfunction

The spinal cord and spinal nerves carry the nerve signals that allow the rest of your body to function, feel sensation – and even have sex. Damage to the spinal cord and the nerves around the spinal cord can cause many problems. If a nerve is damaged that connects to the pelvic region, it could cause sexual dysfunction.

Spinal Cord Injury

Any time you operate on the spine, there is some risk of injuring the spinal cord. This can lead to serious injuries to the nerves or the covering of the spinal cord – the dura. The spinal cord is a column of nerves that connects your brain with the rest of your body, allowing you to control your movements. The nerve fibers in your spinal cord branch off to form pairs of nerve roots that travel through the small openings (foramina) between your vertebrae. The nerves in each area of the spinal cord connect to specific parts of your body. Damage to the spinal cord can cause paralysis in certain areas and not others, depending on which spinal nerves are affected.

Chiropractic can be a complementary medical approach to mainstream medicine as well, and it’s been proven to be one of the safest approaches to naturally and holistically treating patients with a wide range of symptoms or conditions, including: back or neck pain, sciatica, scoliosis, frozen shoulder, acid reflux or digestive issues, headaches, high blood pressure, injuries and neuromusculoskeletal complaints that may require surgery.

Are You Ready to be Pregnant?

by Nova Wellness Center September 15, 2019

Being a mother is one position many women aspire to fill. For most mothers, it is the most fulfilling life experience. For every journey you must prepare; so as a woman how do you prepare for pregnancy?

The health of an expectant mother is critical to the development of a baby in the womb.  Yes, sometimes there are circumstances beyond control; however, there are things that every potential mother can do to create a healthier environment for baby to thrive in.

  • Quit smoking – Nicotine and other toxins found in cigarettes and other tobacco products can poison mother’s blood during pregnancy and lead to low birth weight of baby, a sick baby and in worst case scenario death.
  • Quit Drinking Alcohol – The moment you are ready to conceive you have to quit drinking alcohol completely. Alcohol can pass from the mother’s blood into the baby’s blood through the placenta and affect the baby’s cells. The brain and spinal cord cells are likely to be impaired. The umbrella of disorders that can happen is called fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Children that are born with this disorder may have physical, mental and neurological problems.
  • Eat a balanced diet – You are what you eat. There are different nutrients that you can get from eating foods from the six different nutritional groups. Before, during and after pregnancy you should eat a balanced diet. This should include in balanced proportions proteins, carbohydrates, fats and oils, fibre, vitamins, minerals and water. Baby only feeds from the mother’s blood throughout pregnancy so if mum is malnourished or deficient in some nutrients then baby’s development may be affected. I must note here that. It is only a myth that a pregnant woman should eat for two. Baby only takes very little nutrients from mum’s blood so overeating is not necessary. It is also normal to have cravings during pregnancy but it is best you have control over your cravings. Having ten bottles of coca-cola in the name of cravings is not recommended. Please note that too much weight gain during pregnancy can lead to gestational diabetes and or pregnancy-induced hypertension. These two conditions can lead to complications during the birthing process for mum and baby. So please maintain only healthy cravings to keep weight down. Every pregnant woman needs to drink lots of water. At a minimum, you should be drinking three litres of water a day.
  • Motion is life – Exercise is good for you before, during and after pregnancy. Carrying a two (2) – five (5)kg fetus for nine-plus months is not an easy task for the woman. Exercising however strengthens the body’s joints so that they can withstand the pressure of the added weight. Exercising releases some happy hormone (serotonin) in the body that helps the woman to deal with the stress of being pregnant. When you exercise before and during pregnancy too it helps you to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight faster when you start exercising again.
  • Chiropractic  – Many changes happen to the woman’s body during pregnancy, some women experience morning sickness and pain through a substantial part of the pregnancy. What do you do? Many will resort to drugs however using physiotherapy and or Chiropractic has been proven to be effective in treating back and neck pain. This is because the curve in the lower back increases, the pelvic also gets larger and the abdomen protrudes; all these happen to accommodate the developing fetus. Getting Chiropractic treatment helps the body to adapt to the changes better. It also decreases morning sickness and provides pain relief. It is also safer with few to no side effects. There are special techniques that physiotherapists and Chiropractors use to ensure that baby and mum are safe during treatment.

Finally, please ensure that you are up to date with your pap smears, breast cancer screening and all other medical exams before you conceive.

All the best on your journey to becoming a mother; the best career on this planet.

All You Need to Know About Scoliosis

by Nova Wellness Center August 25, 2019

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder traditionally defined as abnormal curvatures of the spine. Often, the curves appear S-shaped or C-shaped.

The most common form of scoliosis is idiopathic, which accounts for about 80 per cent of scoliosis cases. Unfortunately, idiopathic means “without a known cause,” meaning experts don’t have all the answers for sufferers. Other forms of scoliosis are:

  • Congenital Curve (meaning you were born with the issue)
  • Secondary (caused by a secondary condition, such as arthritis, osteoporosis or osteomalacia)

What are the signs and symptoms?

Typically, those who have scoliosis won’t experience back pain, so it’s important to look for physical signs such as:

  • Uneven shoulders or a shoulder blade that protrudes farther than the other when standing
  • A rib hump (rib prominence) or a lower back hump (lumbar prominence) when bending forward
  • One hip may appear higher than the other

What are the treatment options? Least to Most Invasive

  • Observation

When scoliosis is diagnosed in children, sometimes there is a period of close observation. This is because in some children as they grow the spine may correct itself naturally without any intervention. However, if the condition worsens then the least invasive and most effective treatment to start with is CHIROPRACTIC accompanied by therapeutic exercises.

  • Chiropractic and Therapeutic Exercise

Chiropractic focuses on correcting structural misalignments of the spine thereby removing nerve interferences that could lead to malfunctioning and disease. It is done by HANDS ONLY without the use of drugs or surgery.

Therapeutic Exercise

Swimming is the best exercise for scoliosis because it affects the muscles of the whole back. May help to bring some balance to the entire back.

  • Bracing

If scoliosis continues to worsen and reaches a Cobb angle of 25 to 40 degrees then a brace may be recommended. The brace does not correct the curve but may help decrease the progression of the curve in a growing child. Typically the brace will be most effective in girls below 13 years and boys below 14 years of age. As you can see below it is not a comfortable thing for anybody to wear. Most people will have to wear these braces for about 20 hours a day. However if bracing does not help then the last option may be spinal fusion through surgery.

  • SURGERY

Surgery may be recommended when the Cobb angle reaches between 40 and 50 degrees. At this stage, the spine may be pushing into vital organs like the heart and lungs. That is why surgery has to be done to prevent organ failure.

We believe in prevention rather than cure. If you suspect that your child or somebody you know may be suffering from scoliosis then the earlier they are checked the better. In my experience as a Chiropractor, children that receive Chiropractic treatment early in life if they have scoliosis get great results hence the avoidance of invasive bracing or surgery. Get CHECKED NOW.

Let’s talk about Fibromyalgia

by Nova Wellness Center August 20, 2019

When broken down fibromyalgia simply means “fibro” (New Latin) – fibrous/connective tissue, “mya” (Greek) – muscle and “algos” (Greek) – pain; in other words, pain in the tissues.

This condition is very common in women. It is characterized by general body aches and tenderness, fatigue and difficulty sleeping. People with this condition usually can’t even be rubbed gently without sever pain. They have pain from the top of their heads to the bottom of their feet. Usually, pain medications give little to no relief. There are various causes but physicians are linking genetics, infections and physical and emotional stress to this disorder.

As a Chiropractor, I believe that multiple vertebral subluxations (misalignments) of the spine cause an interruption of the impulses from the brain to the rest of the body. This abnormal communication leads to dysfunction and eventually if not treated chronic pain can ensue. However, if you only treat pain then the underlying cause (vertebral subluxation) still persists so pain and other symptoms may continue to show up.

No cure has been found for this chronic disorder but according to the Journal Of Manipulative Physiological Therapy 2009: 32(9), there was moderate evidence that Chiropractic, cognitive behavioural therapy and aerobic exercise was seen to have produced the best results. As compared to patients that had pharmacological treatments, they observed that patients who had Chiropractic treatment, had better range of motion, decrease in pain, increase in functioning and a general better sense of well-being.

Here in Ghana, we have successfully used Chiropractic, therapeutic exercises, massage therapy and nutritional supplements to manage the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Many people walk around with this much pain and they think it is normal but it is not normal to have pain all over your body all day every day. Please ask for help if this is you or if there is somebody in your life who suffers like this. Do not over drug yourself with pain killers as too much of it also has side effects.

Chiropractic care is good for children.

by Nova Wellness Center August 11, 2019

Many people are unaware kids are excellent candidates for chiropractic care.

Why should children receive chiropractic care?

The nervous system, which consists of your brain, spinal cord and nerves, controls everything in the body, including growth and development. Infants, children and adults can all experience subluxations or misalignments in the spine. Infants and children can become subluxated from birth trauma, other minor or major traumas and developmental stress. These subluxations cause stress to the nervous system which can lead to a decrease in function of the affected area.

During the first five years of life, the body produces more neural pathways than at any other time. It is vital this production is optimized as the first few years are crucial to each child’s potential.

Should healthy children receive chiropractic care and at what age?

The youngest child I have adjusted before was only about one month old. I have also seen toddlers all the way up to teenagers as well. Mind you kid’s adjustments are very different from the adults. Now, think back to when you were a kid, how many bumps and bruises, falls and slips did you take as a child?

If you ask my mother, it was probably in the thousands! Each fall or bump has the possibility of misaligning or subluxating the spine, thereby affecting the nerves and the functioning of the body. These misalignments should be corrected as soon as possible. Optimizing the nervous system, whether you deem the child “sick” or “healthy,” will lead to many positive results. Increased energy, decreased symptoms of ADD/ADHD and a heightened immune system are some of the positive, potential results from chiropractic all children should enjoy.

Don’t forget that only a healthy child will develop into a healthy adult. If there are signs of postural abnormality, pain or decreased range of motion and decreased functioning please do not associate it with growing pains. Send your child to be checked by a certified physician as soon as possible. At the Chiropractic clinic, many conditions can be treated in children only if it is caught early whiles their bones are still developing.

ACT NOW.

Premenstrual Syndrome and Menopause

by Nova Wellness Center August 11, 2019

Women go through various hormonal changes from puberty all the way till menopause. How do you manage these bodily changes? Today, more women are seeking out natural and alternative methods to treat symptoms from pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause, such as chiropractic care. Not all women experience PMS (about three out of four women report PMS symptoms), but all women will go through menopause in their lifetime.

PMS Symptoms Explained

There are over 150 identified and reported symptoms of PMS. Common symptoms include: bloating, irritability, headaches, migraines, breast tenderness, fatigue, stress, cramping, back pain, nausea and weight gain.

There are physiological explanations for these symptoms. For example, lowered levels of serotonin during this time can cause mood changes, irritability and depression; high levels of excess estrogen can also cause irritability and nervousness. An imbalance of progesterone and estrogen can cause water retention, thus affecting weight gain. Abnormal thyroid function can contribute to breast tenderness, and blood sugar imbalance can lead to cravings, headache and fatigue.

Reaching Menopause

On average, women begin to experience the symptoms of menopause at age 51. This transitional time starts with “perimenopause,” which can begin several years before the last menstrual period. The most common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause reported are hot flashes, night sweats and sleep issues, which can be attributed to a change in levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Superfoods for ALL women

Quinoa. This food is a main stay on superfood lists because of its high protein content complete with all nine essential amino acids, but it’s also been found to fight off PMS symptoms and lower blood pressure, especially for postmenopausal women.

Shiitake Mushrooms– Native to East Asia, shiitake mushrooms have been shown to lower cholesterol and strengthen immune system health. Mushroom also has high levels of vitamin D, an essential vitamin that many people lack today; especially pregnant women. Dandelion. Yes, those weeds in your backyard! This salad and green smoothie friendly veggie is loaded with antioxidants and is linked to a lowered risk of ovarian, breast and colon cancers. It also keeps your blood pressure down.

Walnuts – A bit of walnuts each day has been shown to drop cholesterol, prevent heart disease and reduce stress. Plus, a new study revealed that walnuts lowered the risk of breast cancer in mice.

Beef – This one may surprise you. Grass-fed, lean beef contains conjugated linoleic acid which researchers are finding may fight cancer. Other nutrients include iron, protein, zinc and B vitamins. Be sure to pick a lean, high-quality cut and stick to one or two servings a week.

Broccoli – Grabbing a spot on both genders’ lists, this dinner table staple has been proven to combat estrogen excess which may help prevent breast cancer and is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, fibre, folate, calcium, iron and potassium.

Dark Chocolate – This sweet treat is filled with antioxidants, reduces blood pressure and cholesterol and increases blood flow to the brain. Perhaps most importantly, dark chocolate can lower the risk of stroke. Please remember that moderation is still key. Too much dark sugar may lead to high blood sugar levels.

Headaches?

by Nova Wellness Center July 31, 2019

Headaches are so common that some people actually think it is normal to have a headache everyday however it is not.

According to the World Health Organization, about 47 per cent of the adult population worldwide experiences at least a headache within the year.

Causes of Headaches

Abnormal interaction between blood vessels, nerves and the muscles of the head and neck region usually cause headaches.

There are different types of Headaches:

  1. Migraine – Can be hereditary; usually brought on by lights, noise, certain smells, foods etc. Usually resolves after the causal agent has been removed.
  2. Tension Headaches – Caused by stressful events from work, marriage, school, tiredness, too much alcohol, dehydration etc.. Resolves usually by rest, stress relief mechanisms(music, exercising etc)
  3. Hormonal headaches – Usually in women during menstruation/menopause.
  4. Cluster Headaches – The least common but most severe. You may get cluster attacks of 2 – 3 headaches a day for 2 weeks or even 3 months. After which they may subside and return later. Usually a one-sided headache, throbbing/piercing pain.
  5. Chronic Progressive Headaches – Caused by another disease or infection. Cancer, hypertension, aneurysm, clots, HIV etc. Usually gets worse with time in intensity and frequency.
  6. Acute Headaches (In Children) – Usually short-lived. Could be due to trauma ( a fall or accident), ear, sinus or throat infection. Usually resolves after the infection clears.
  7. Sinus Headaches – Brought on by sinus infections, colds etc. Pain is usually in the forehead, cheekbones, jaws etc.

Treatment: Least invasive to most invasive.

  • Chiropractic – Research has shown that many headaches are as a result of a misalignment of the first two neck vertebrae, the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). A gentle neck adjustment done by a Chiropractic physician can remove nerve interference and restore the communication between the brain and the structures in the neck and the upper back area thus relieving the headache.
  • Massage – Tight muscles due to bad posture can also cause headaches. Therapeutic massage of the neck and upper back area can help the muscles in that area to relax and also bring relief.
Nova Massage
Nova Wellness Center offers massage services
  • Nutrition – It is essential to eat a balanced diet to get all the different vitamins and minerals to maximize the efficiency of all the body’s cells, tissues and organs. Sometimes starvation or malnutrition can also cause headaches. Being dehydrated is also a common cause of headaches. Drinking a lot of water in this instance will give you relief from that headache.
  • Exercise – Exercise releases ‘feel good’ hormones into your body and can help you de-stress thus helping you to manage the headache better.
  • Pain killers – Important to get prescribed medications. Pain killers may masking the symptom temporarily and may prevent proper diagnosis of Headaches. Be sure to get a proper diagnosis from your medical doctor and a prescription for medication before you use this treatment.
  • Surgery (If all else fails) – When there is a tumor in the brain, for instance, causing constant headaches sometimes only surgery can be performed to remove the tumor and then you may get some relief from the headache.

Headaches are so common that some people actually think it is normal to have a headache everyday however it is not. If not treated well it can lead to decreased productivity at work and even affect relationships at home. Do not take it lightly. Get a proper diagnosis and treatment from your local Chiropractor today.
